Ahmed Tobasi – And here I am
(Palestine)
Alone on stage, Ahmed Tobasi tells. Childhood in Jenin, the intifada, military raids, violence, death. His teenage years as a rebellious kid, the assault rifle as the only considered response. Prison at seventeen. The encounter with theater, its salvation, its redemption.
Magnified by the writing of the multi-awarded Iraqi writer Hassan Abdulrazzak, And here I Am is, in spite of everything, a theatrical road movie of incomparable power, a heartbreaking political comedy and a plea for resilience, filled with sorrow and ghosts, freedom and hope.
Acclaimed in theaters around the world since 2017, And here I Am is presented this year outside the walls; the opportunity for Aurillac to share the vision of an artist who resonates with his time, and who, through a story far from any media prism, shares his inspiration. And his resistance.
Actor and artistic director of Freedom Theater, Ahmed Tobasi is one of the strongest voices in Palestinian theater today. After a brutal childhood in a refugee camp, he joined the armed struggle before being imprisoned in Israel. He then made a choice: from now on, he would use art to make his people’s voice heard. Politically exiled in Norway, he trained as an actor at the Nordic Black Theatre, before going on to gain international recognition.
