Jaha Koo – Cuckoo

(Seoul/South Korea – Gent/Belgium)

On the table, three rice pressure cookers – emblematic accessories if there ever was one, with words.
In the background, a white screen.
No frills, no artifice: the Cuckoo decor reflects its purpose – going straight to the point. Using the codes of the real-fake conference, with video projection and offbeat comments, Jaha Koo dissects the last twenty years of South Korean history with a chainsaw; especially the effect of the Asian financial crisis of 1997 on the populations.

Philosophising with his rice cookers, he studies the loneliness and alienation of people, the obsession of performance, the highest suicide rate in the world, the indifference of the authorities, the necrotic system, the repressions.
A scathing rereading, desperately funny and sad at the same time, delivered in the utmost calm by a multiple talented artist.

It’s been over a decade since Jaha Koo moved from Korea to Belgium, and just as long since he used theater to take a sharp look at his native country’s societal system. Actor, playwright, composer and video artist, all his shows combine personal storytelling, social criticism and new technologies. His Hamartia trilogy includes Lolling and Rolling, Cuckoo and The History of Korean Western Theatre.
