A litany of movements, repetition of gestures, carried by breath until saturation, until overflow. Again and again, until the tipping point where the body no longer stands alone but becomes a collective. On stage, nine dancers jump, spin, and push themselves until they exhaust both the space and themselves. Borrowing its name from an eighteenth-century Moroccan Sufi brotherhood, HMADCHA draws from tradition to talk about today, shattering the boundaries between sacred and profane, individual and collective. Part of the trilogy Le Monde en transe, born through Covid, Taoufiq Izeddiou’s creation asserts a frontal gesture: turning the body into an act of resistance against the silent norms imposed upon us — viruses, power, domination. Against a world that confines, HMADCHA opposes excess, density, and presence. Here, dancing is resisting. And asserting oneself.

Actor, boxer, architecture student — nothing predestined this man from Marrakech to shake up his country’s choreographic scene. However, in 2003, he co-founded Morocco’s first contemporary dance company, then launched the festival On Marche, opening doors for an entire generation of African artists. Since then, his dramaturgy has drawn from Gnawa trance, flamenco, and ancestral rituals — a telluric, physical language where bodies burn down to the bone.
